Animal Health Certificate

Animal Health Certificates are required for travelling abroad with your pet. These must be issued by an official vet shortly before travel and confirm your pet meets the entry requirements for your destination.

As a result of new regulations from the EU, EU pet passports issued to GB residents before 22 April 2026 may no longer be valid documents for entry to the EU. From 22nd April 2026 EU pet passports are only issued to people whose main home is in the EU and should not be used by people who have holiday homes in the EU or visit seasonally. UK residents are required to have an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) issued for each trip to the EU. GB residents are still able to use EU pet passports for their return journey to GB.

Although you still need a new AHC for each trip from GB to the EU, the certificate can now be used for up to six months (previously 4 months) for onward travel within the EU and for re entering Great Britain, as long as rabies vaccinations remain valid.

If you aren't travelling with your pet, they must travel within 5 days of you. The person accompanying your pet must carry written permission from you, and this permission must travel with the pet's travel document.

Questions you may have

When do I need an Animal Health Certificate (AHC)?

An AHC is required for pets travelling from the UK to the EU. It confirms your pet is microchipped, vaccinated, and healthy to travel.

How far in advance do I need to book an AHC appointment?

We recommend booking at least 2–3 weeks in advance, especially during busy travel seasons.

What do I need to bring for an AHC appointment?

Please bring your pet’s microchip number, vaccination history and travel details. We also ask that the person travelling with the animal attends the appointment to sign relevant paperwork.
